Churchill is the planned town of the Latrobe Valley. Laid out in the 1960s to house workers for the nearby Hazelwood power station, it was designed with curving streets, cul-de-sacs, walking paths and plenty of open space. Today it’s home to Federation University’s Gippsland campus, families who’ve been in town since the beginning, students, retirees and newer residents drawn by affordable homes and the bushland of the Strzelecki foothills to the south. Hazelwood Pondage sits just to the north, and the town has a quieter, leafier feel than the larger Valley centres.
We provide handyman services across Churchill 3842, including family homes, rental properties, student houses and units.
Churchill’s housing
Original 1960s and 1970s homes
Most of Churchill’s original houses were built over a short period, so many share similar designs, materials and ageing patterns. They are typically brick veneer or weatherboard homes with timber or early aluminium windows, original or once-renovated kitchens and bathrooms, and established gardens. Now more than fifty years old, they commonly need:
- Doors that have dropped on their hinges or stopped latching
- Windows that are stiff or won’t lock
- Regrouting and resealing in original bathrooms
- Plaster cracks around door frames and cornices
- Kitchen cupboard hinges and drawer runners
- Fence posts and palings replaced
- Gutters cleared of leaves from the town’s many trees
Because so many homes are similar, we often know where to look for problems before we arrive.
Student houses and rentals
With Federation University in town, Churchill has a large rental market, including houses shared by students. These homes see heavy use and frequent turnover. Typical work includes patching holes in walls, replacing broken door handles and locks (non-restricted hardware), repairing flyscreens, fixing towel rails and toilet roll holders, assembling and repairing furniture and preparing the property between tenancies. We work around academic calendars, with the busiest times being before semesters start and after exams. See end of lease repairs and property managers.
Newer homes and units
Newer housing in Churchill needs the usual new-home jobs: TV mounting, shelving, curtain rails and blinds, flat pack assembly and minor adjustments.

Bushfire awareness in Churchill
Churchill sits at the edge of the Strzelecki foothills, and the 2009 Black Saturday fires burned through the hills to the south and east of town around Callignee and Jeeralang, with tragic loss of life. Residents here know the importance of being prepared. A handyman can help with the practical side of preparation:
- Cleaning gutters and removing leaf litter from roofs we can safely reach
- Repairing or fitting flyscreens and mesh to keep embers out of windows and vents
- Sealing gaps under doors and around frames
- Clearing combustible items from under decks and around the house
- Repairing gates so they open fully for emergency access
- Removing rubbish and garden waste that fits in our vehicle
These jobs complement your bushfire plan and CFA advice; they don’t replace them. See our fire season preparation guide.
Churchill’s leafy streets
Churchill was planned with trees in mind, and its mature eucalypts and exotic trees are part of its character. They also mean gutters fill quickly, shaded paths grow moss and slippery algae, and branches occasionally fall on fences. Regular gutter cleaning, annual pressure washing of paths and quick fence repairs after storms keep homes in good shape. See pressure washing.
Older residents
Many of Churchill’s first residents still live in the homes they moved into decades ago. We help them stay safe and comfortable with grab rails, step rails, lever handles, raised shelving and practical jobs like curtain hanging and gutter cleaning. Family members can contact us by email to arrange work.

Working near the university
University staff and visiting academics sometimes rent or buy in Churchill for a fixed period. We help them settle in with furniture assembly, picture hanging and small repairs, and help them prepare the house when they leave.

We also service Morwell, Traralgon, Hazelwood North, Traralgon South, Moe, Newborough, Tyers, Glengarry and Yallourn North.
Getting a quote in Churchill
Send your list with photos through our free quote form. For rentals, tell us whether the property is tenanted and how access will work. We’ll reply by email with an itemised quote.
Inside a typical Churchill visit
A Churchill booking usually starts with an email containing a list and a few photos. From that, we work out the materials, the tools and roughly how long each item will take, and send back an itemised quote. On the day, we arrive at the agreed time, walk through the list with you, protect floors and furniture, and work through the items in a sensible order. Dusty tasks such as sanding plaster come first, followed by tasks that need drying time, so the visit runs efficiently. At the end, we check each item with you and take photos. If you’re at work or the property is tenanted, we send the photos by email instead.
Bathrooms in original Churchill homes
Many original Churchill bathrooms are still in use, often with their original wall tiles and a bath with an over-bath shower. They usually still look reasonable, but grout cracks, silicone goes mouldy and water can start to get behind tiles. Left alone, this leads to drummy tiles, swollen skirting and rotten timber framing. Regrouting and resealing every few years costs little compared with the repairs it prevents. We remove failed silicone completely, clean and dry the joints, treat mould and apply fresh mould-resistant silicone. We can also replace a few cracked tiles where matching tiles are available, and fit new towel rails, shelves and grab rails into the wall properly. See tiling and regrouting.

Fences between neighbours
Churchill’s original subdivisions created many shared timber fences that are now reaching the end of their lives at the same time. Posts rot at ground level, rails split and the fence starts to lean. In many cases, replacing a few posts and the worst palings will give the fence years more life without the cost of a full replacement. We provide written quotes that neighbours can share, and we can repair just one section after storm damage. Gates are another common job: we rehang dropped gates, fit new hinges and latches, and make sure they close on their own if needed for pool areas or pets.
Getting a rental ready between tenants
When a Churchill rental becomes vacant, especially at the end of the academic year, there’s often a short window to get it ready. Our typical turnover list includes patching and painting marked walls, replacing broken blind cords or fittings, adjusting doors and cupboard hinges, replacing torn flyscreens, resealing the shower, fixing loose towel rails and tidying the garden edges and gutters. We can work from the property manager’s outgoing inspection report and send photos of every item for the file.
Honest advice
If a job isn’t worth doing, or if replacing something would cost less than repairing it, we’ll tell you. If something on your list needs a licensed electrician, plumber or roofer, we’ll say so clearly in the quote.
Hazelwood Pondage and outdoor areas
The Hazelwood Pondage, just north of town, has long been a spot for fishing and water activities, and Churchill households enjoy plenty of outdoor living. Decks, pergolas and outdoor furniture take a beating from summer sun and winter damp. We replace split deck boards, refix loose ones with new screws, clean and re-oil timber, repair pergola rafters and assemble outdoor furniture. Doing this before summer means your outdoor space is ready when the warm evenings arrive. See deck and pergola repairs.
Tidy, careful work
We treat every Churchill home with care. Drop sheets go down before tools come out, offcuts and old materials are removed, and surfaces are wiped down before we leave. If we’re working in an older home, we check what wall and eave linings are made of before drilling, because some materials from the 1960s and 1970s contain asbestos.
