Plenty of carpentry work is too small for a building company and too fiddly to do yourself without the right tools. Think of a rotten window sill, a run of shelves in an alcove, a broken step on the back porch, a set of new architraves after a floor change, a timber screen to hide the bins, or a bench seat for the verandah. That is handyman carpentry: small-scale timber work done accurately and finished properly.
We carry out carpentry repairs and small builds across Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Newborough, Churchill and nearby towns and rural blocks. Whether the job is a single sill or a day’s worth of trims and shelving, we treat it with the same care.
Timber repairs
Rotten timber
Timber rots where water sits and where it cannot dry out. In Latrobe Valley homes we most often find rot in:
- Window sills and the bottom rails of timber window sashes
- The bottom of external door frames and thresholds
- Fascia boards behind overflowing gutters
- Verandah posts where they meet the ground or concrete
- Weatherboards close to the ground or behind garden beds
- Deck joists and bearers
Small areas of rot can be cut out and replaced with a matching piece of timber spliced in. That keeps the original frame and saves the cost of full replacement. Where the rot is widespread, we replace the whole piece. We use treated or naturally durable timber for exterior repairs, and prime all faces, including the hidden ones, before fixing.
An important point: rot and termite damage can look similar at first glance. If we find mud tubes, hollow-sounding timber or other signs of termites, we stop and recommend a licensed pest inspector before any repairs. Termites are active in parts of Gippsland, and repairing timber over an active infestation just feeds them.
Weatherboards
We replace split, warped or rotten weatherboards and match profiles as closely as possible. Many older homes in Moe, Morwell and Newborough have hardwood or cypress weatherboards in profiles that are no longer standard, so we source the closest match or mill a match where practical. Fibro and other sheet claddings in pre-1990 homes may contain asbestos and are not something we cut or remove.
Verandahs and porches
Timber verandah posts, beams, brackets and floorboards take a beating from the weather. We replace rotten post bases with galvanised stirrups or new posts, repair floorboards and steps, and fix loose decorative brackets. Where the structure itself is sagging, we will recommend a builder.
Trims and finishing carpentry
Architraves and skirtings
When floors are replaced, doors are moved or walls are patched, trims often need replacing. We fit architraves around doors and windows and skirting boards along walls, mitred cleanly at corners, nailed, filled and ready for paint. We match existing profiles where possible, from simple splayed pine to the more decorative profiles in older homes. See also floor and skirting repairs.
Window sills and reveals
We replace cracked or rotten internal sills, fit new reveals after window replacement, and fill and finish gaps between frames and plaster.
Cornice and picture rails
Picture rails were common in mid-century homes, and some owners like to restore them so artwork can hang without new holes. We fit timber picture rails at the right height, and the hooks that go with them.
Shelving and storage
Well-built storage makes the most of a room. We build and install:
- Alcove shelving in the recesses beside a chimney breast or in a hallway nook
- Floating shelves fixed with concealed brackets into studs or masonry
- Built-in bookshelves and window seats with storage underneath
- Linen press and pantry shelving, including adjustable systems
- Wardrobe fit-outs with hanging rails, shelves and shoe racks
- Garage and shed shelving, heavy-duty timber benches and wall racks
- Laundry storage above machines, with a bench over a front loader
We use timber, plywood, MDF or melamine to suit the job and the finish you want, and can leave pieces primed for painting or finished with clear coat.
Small timber builds
- Timber steps for a back door or a sloping yard
- Bin screens and heat pump enclosures
- Garden benches and planter boxes
- Raised vegetable garden beds
- Timber edging for garden beds and paths
- Small timber ramps (see grab rails and accessibility)
- Cubby repairs and timber play equipment repairs
- Dog kennels, chicken coop repairs and timber gates
Larger structures such as pergolas, decks over certain heights and carports may need building permits and engineering, and some need a registered builder. We will tell you when that applies, and see our page on deck and pergola repairs for repair work on existing structures.

Choosing timber for the Valley climate
Outdoor timber in the Latrobe Valley needs to handle wet winters and dry, hot summers. We generally recommend:
- Treated pine (H3) for above-ground exterior use such as decking, screens and garden structures
- Treated pine (H4/H5) for posts in the ground or in contact with concrete and soil
- Hardwoods such as spotted gum or merbau for decking and steps where you want durability and colour
- Galvanised or stainless fixings outside, so they do not rust and stain the timber
Internally, pine, Tasmanian oak or painted MDF suit most trims and shelving.
How we work on carpentry jobs
1. Measure and plan. For anything beyond a simple repair, we measure on site or from your photos and dimensions, and confirm the design by email.
2. Source materials. We buy timber and hardware to suit, cutting to size where practical before the visit to save time.
3. Protect and build. We protect floors, set up a cutting area outside where possible to keep dust down, and build or repair.
4. Finish properly. Nail holes are filled, edges sanded and joints caulked. We prime or finish as agreed.
5. Clean up. Off-cuts, sawdust and packaging go with us.
Areas we cover for carpentry
Carpentry repairs and small builds in Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Newborough, Churchill, Yallourn North, Glengarry, Tyers, Traralgon South and Hazelwood North.
Carpentry versus building work
In Victoria, building work above a certain value needs a registered building practitioner, and some work needs a permit regardless of value. That includes many structural alterations, new decks above certain heights, and new verandahs and pergolas attached to a house. Handyman carpentry sits below those thresholds: repairs, replacements, trims, shelving and small non-structural builds. When a job crosses into building work, we will tell you, and it is worth checking with Latrobe City Council’s building department or the Victorian Building Authority if you are unsure.

Matching old and new
One of the most satisfying parts of handyman carpentry is matching new timber to old so the repair blends in. That might mean finding a skirting profile close to one installed in the 1950s, splicing a section into an original window sill, or building a shelf to line up with an existing built-in. It takes a little more time, but the result is a house that looks cared for rather than patched.
Carpentry projects that suit Latrobe Valley homes
Mudrooms and entry storage
Wet, muddy winters and big yards mean boots, coats and dog leads pile up at the back door. A simple entry bench with a shoe rack underneath and a row of hooks or a timber hanging rail above keeps the laundry or back hallway under control. We can build one to fit an awkward corner, using durable melamine or painted timber that wipes clean.
Wood heater surrounds and wood storage
Wood heaters are common in the Valley, particularly in older homes and on rural blocks. We build timber firewood racks for verandahs and sheds, with a roof and a slatted base so the wood stays dry and off the ground. Inside, we can build shelving and storage near the heater, but always outside the clearances the heater manufacturer specifies for combustible materials. We will check the manual before building anything nearby.
Study nooks and home offices
Many people now work from home at least part of the week. A built-in desk in a spare bedroom corner, under a staircase or in a hallway alcove, with shelves above and cable access through the desktop, creates a proper workspace without buying bulky furniture.
Kids’ rooms
Built-in desks, wall-mounted bookshelves anchored securely to studs, window seats with toy storage underneath, and robust timber bunk-bed repairs are all common jobs in family homes in Traralgon and Churchill.
Outdoor timber for acreage blocks
On lifestyle blocks in Tyers, Glengarry, Traralgon South and Hazelwood North, we build and repair timber gates, post-and-rail sections near the house, simple animal shelters, raised garden beds, timber steps down slopes, and work benches in sheds. Exposure to weather out there is greater, so we size timbers generously and use treated or hardwood timbers with galvanised fixings.
Tools that make the difference
Good carpentry relies on accurate measuring and cutting. We bring a mitre saw for clean, accurate trim joints, a track or circular saw for sheet goods, routers for rebates and edge profiles, planers, a range of clamps, laser levels for long shelves and trims, and stud finders and moisture meters for checking walls and timber before we start. The moisture meter matters more than people expect. Fixing new timber to a wet frame, or painting timber that has not dried out, is a common reason repairs fail early.
Getting a carpentry quote
For repairs, photos of the damaged timber and a wider shot of the surrounding area are usually enough. For new shelving or built-ins, send rough dimensions of the space, a photo, and a sketch or an image from a magazine or Pinterest showing the look you want. We will reply by email with suggestions, materials options and a clear scope.
Frequently asked questions
Can you repair a rotten window sill?
Yes. Small areas of rot can be cut out and a new piece spliced in. Badly rotted sills are replaced with new timber, primed on all faces.
Do you build custom shelving?
Yes. We build alcove shelves, floating shelves, built-in bookcases, wardrobe fit-outs and garage storage to suit the space.
Can you replace weatherboards?
Yes, timber weatherboards matched as closely as possible to your profile. We do not cut or remove fibro that may contain asbestos.
Can you build a deck or pergola?
We repair existing decks and pergolas and build small low-level timber structures. New decks and pergolas that need permits may need a registered builder.
What if you find termites?
We stop work and recommend a licensed pest inspector before any timber repairs, so the problem is treated first.
