Bathrooms take a lot of daily use, and small fittings are often the first things to fail. Towel rails pull away from the wall, toilet roll holders come loose, mirror clips break and cabinet doors drop. New owners often want to swap dated chrome accessories for a matching modern set. Each job is small, but in a tiled, wet room it needs to be done carefully. A cracked tile or a fixing that lets water into the wall can turn a ten-minute job into a costly repair.
We install and replace bathroom fixtures and accessories in homes, rentals and units across Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Newborough, Churchill and nearby towns. We drill tiles cleanly, fix into solid backing where possible, and seal every penetration in wet areas.
Accessories we install
- Towel rails: single and double bars, towel rings and hooks. We can fit non-heated rails ourselves. Heated towel rails need an electrician for the electrical connection, and we can mount the rail ready for them.
- Toilet roll holders and spare-roll holders
- Robe hooks on walls and doors
- Soap dishes, shower shelves and corner caddies
- Mirrors: frameless mirrors on clips or channels, framed mirrors on cleats or D-rings, and mirror re-hanging
- Shaving cabinets and mirrored cabinets, wall-hung and recessed (recessed where the wall cavity allows)
- Open shelving and glass shelves
- Grab rails for safety; see our grab rails page
- Shower curtain rails and tension rods, including L-shaped and curved rails
- Bathroom door hardware: privacy sets, door stops and hooks
Replacing and upgrading
Many Latrobe Valley homes still have their original bathroom from the 1960s to the 1990s, with ceramic soap holders built into the tiles, chrome rails on screw-on plates and old mirrors with corroded silvering. Swapping these for a modern matching set is one of the cheapest ways to make a bathroom feel newer without renovating.
When we replace accessories:
1. We remove the old fitting carefully and check the wall fixings behind.
2. We try to reuse existing holes where the new fitting allows. That avoids drilling new holes in the tiles.
3. Where the new fitting does not line up, we fill old holes with a colour-matched filler or grout, or cover them with a cover plate where suitable.
4. We fix the new fitting into studs, noggings or solid backing, or with the right anchors for the wall.
5. We seal around each fixing with silicone where water can reach it.
Matte black, brushed nickel, brushed brass and gunmetal finishes are popular now. Buying a complete set from the same range keeps the finish and style consistent. We can install accessories you buy, or advise on what to look for before you buy.
Drilling tiles properly
Most of the risk in bathroom accessory work comes from drilling tiles. We:
- Use diamond core bits or tile bits suited to the tile, including porcelain, which is very hard
- Start slowly without hammer action to stop the bit wandering and avoid cracking
- Drill through grout lines where the fitting allows, because grout is easier to patch later
- Check for pipes and cables behind the wall before drilling, using a detector and common sense about where plumbing usually runs
- Seal each hole with silicone before inserting anchors in shower areas
If you have spare tiles left from your build or renovation, keep them. They are invaluable if a tile ever needs replacing.
Mirrors and cabinets
Large bathroom mirrors are heavy and fragile. We fix frameless mirrors with mirror clips or channels into solid fixings, and we never rely on adhesive alone for a large mirror above a basin. For framed mirrors, we use cleats or two-point hanging so the mirror sits level and cannot swing.
Shaving cabinets need fixing into studs or backing because they carry the weight of the cabinet, mirror doors and contents. Recessed cabinets need a cavity of the right depth and no pipes or cables in the way. We can check that before you buy one.
Shower screens and hardware
We can adjust and repair shower screen hardware: tightening hinges, replacing worn seals and door wipers, re-fixing loose wall channels and re-siliconing the screen base. Replacing glass panels, especially frameless glass, is best done by a specialist glazier because of the weight and safety glass requirements. If a screen panel has been cracked or chipped, it should be replaced promptly, because toughened glass can shatter without warning when damaged.
What we do not do
Bathroom work crosses into licensed trades quickly. We do not:
- Connect or move taps, shower roses, toilets or vanities, which is licensed plumbing work
- Wire heated towel rails, exhaust fans, lights or shaver points, which is licensed electrical work
- Carry out waterproofing, which needs a registered waterproofer and certification in Victoria
We are happy to work alongside your plumber and electrician. For example, we can fit the accessories and hardware once the trades have finished.

Bathroom refresh without a renovation
If your bathroom is tired but sound, a handyman refresh can make a big difference:
- New matching accessories, as above
- Silicone and caulking replaced around the bath, shower and vanity
- Regrouting and replacing a few cracked tiles
- Painting the ceiling and walls with a mould-resistant bathroom paint
- A new mirror or shaving cabinet
- Repairing or replacing the bathroom door and hardware
That often gets a bathroom through another ten years before a full renovation is needed. It also suits rentals between tenants and homes being prepared for sale.
Rentals and property managers
Loose towel rails and broken toilet roll holders are among the most common items on routine inspection reports. We can work through a list of small bathroom repairs for a property manager in a single visit, coordinate access with the tenant and send photos for the file.
Areas we cover
Bathroom accessories and fixtures installed in Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Newborough, Churchill, Yallourn North, Glengarry, Tyers, Traralgon South and Hazelwood North.
Moisture and ventilation
Bathroom fittings last longer in a dry bathroom. Many older Valley homes have no exhaust fan, or a fan that vents into the roof space instead of outside. Steam then condenses on walls and ceilings, rusts fittings, blackens grout and silicone, and grows mould on the ceiling. We can clean and treat mould-affected surfaces, repaint with mould-resistant paint and suggest improvements, but the fan itself must be installed and wired by an electrician. A fan that actually runs while you shower, and for 10 to 15 minutes afterwards, makes more difference to bathroom condition than anything else.
Choosing accessories that last
- Solid brass or stainless steel bodies last longer than zinc alloy or plastic with plated finishes.
- Concealed fixings look neater and are harder to knock loose.
- Towel rails with two mounting points are stronger than single-post designs for wide rails.
- Matte finishes hide water spots and fingerprints better than polished chrome.
- Check the projection of rails and hooks from the wall, especially near doors and in narrow ensuites.

Bathroom wall types in Latrobe Valley homes
Tiles on cement sheet or render
Many post-war and SEC-era homes in Moe, Newborough, Morwell and Yallourn North have tiles fixed over cement render or fibre cement sheet. These walls hold fixings well once drilled, but older fibre cement sheeting installed before the late 1980s may contain asbestos. We do not drill, cut or sand material that might contain asbestos without confirming what it is. If your home was built before 1990 and the bathroom has never been renovated, mention it in your quote request. We can work out the safest approach, which may include testing by a licensed assessor first.
Tiles on plasterboard (villaboard or wet-area board)
Homes renovated or built from the 1990s onward usually have tiles over wet-area plasterboard. That board needs fixings into studs or noggings for anything carrying weight. Light items such as toilet roll holders can sometimes go into board with suitable anchors, but towel rails and cabinets should go into framing.
Brick and block
Some bathrooms, particularly in solid brick homes and units, have tiles directly onto brick or block. Masonry gives excellent fixings, but takes longer to drill and needs the right plugs.
Small bathroom, smart storage
Many older homes have small bathrooms with little storage. Some simple ideas we install often:
- A mirrored shaving cabinet in place of a plain mirror, which doubles the storage without using floor space
- A shelf above the toilet for spare rolls and towels
- Over-door hooks or a row of robe hooks instead of a bulky towel rail
- A corner shelf in the shower instead of bottles on the floor
- A narrow wall cabinet beside the vanity where there is space
Bathroom accessories at sale time
If you are selling a home in Traralgon or Moe, the bathroom is one of the rooms buyers look at most closely. Loose rails, stained silicone and mismatched fittings make a bathroom look older and less cared for than it is. A morning of handyman work before photos and open inspections is worth considering.
Hooks and rails on bathroom doors
Hollow-core bathroom doors cannot hold screw-in hooks well. We use over-door hooks, hollow-door anchors suited to light loads, or fix a timber batten across the door’s solid rails before mounting hooks. For heavy dressing gowns and wet towels, a wall-mounted rail or hook board is usually the better choice.
Cleaning and caring for new fittings
To keep new accessories looking good, wipe them with a soft damp cloth and dry them. Avoid abrasive cleaners, bleach and descalers on matte black and brushed finishes, because these can strip the coating.
Frequently asked questions
