Fence Repairs & Gates

Fencing contractors dominate the search results for “fence repairs traralgon”, and they are the right call for a full new boundary fence. Most fence problems are smaller than that. A few palings have blown off. One post has rotted at ground level and the panel is leaning into the neighbour’s yard. The side gate drags on the concrete and will not latch, so the dog keeps getting out. Those jobs are often too small for a fencing crew to fit in quickly, and they are exactly what a handyman is for.

We repair timber fences and gates across Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Newborough, Churchill and the rural-residential areas around them. We fix what is broken, tell you honestly when a section is past repair, and leave the fence straight, secure and safe.

Common fence problems in the Latrobe Valley

The weather here is hard on fences. Strong westerlies funnel along the valley in winter and spring, and a paling fence acts like a sail. Wet winters keep the base of posts damp for months, and clay-heavy soils in parts of Traralgon, Morwell and Churchill hold water around the timber. Then hot, dry summers shrink and split the palings. The result is a predictable set of faults.

Loose, split and missing palings

Palings come loose when nails rust through or the timber shrinks away from the rail. We re-fix loose palings with galvanised nails or screws, replace split and missing ones with matching timber, and can run a new capping rail along the top to stiffen a tired fence.

Rotten or leaning posts

Timber posts usually fail right at ground level, where the wood stays wet and is exposed to air. A post that has rotted through lets the whole panel lean. We dig out the old post and set a new treated-pine or hardwood post in concrete. Alternatively, we fit a galvanised steel post support (sometimes called a “fence post saver”) bolted to the sound part of the old post and concreted in. That is often a quicker and cheaper fix when the rest of the post is still good.

Sagging rails

Rails can split at the joint with the post, or sag where a span is too long. We re-fix or replace rails and add a centre support where needed.

Storm damage

After a big blow we see whole panels flattened, often because one rotten post finally gave way and dragged the rest down. We clear the damaged section, check the neighbouring posts, and rebuild the panel. If you are claiming on insurance, we can send dated photos and a written description of the damage and the repair.

Gate repairs

Gates get used every day, and they wear out faster than the fence around them. We fix:

  • Sagging gates that drag on the ground. We tighten or replace the hinges, add a diagonal brace or a turnbuckle and cable, and re-hang the gate square.
  • Gates that will not latch because the post has moved or the gate has dropped. We realign the latch or fit a new one: gravity latches, D-latches, pool-style magnetic latches where appropriate, and lockable latches.
  • Broken or rusted hinges. We replace them with heavy-duty galvanised or powder-coated hinges.
  • Rotten gate frames. We rebuild the frame and reuse the palings where we can.
  • New timber gates built to fit an existing opening, including wide driveway gates on acreage blocks in Tyers, Glengarry and Hazelwood North.

If a gate is part of a pool barrier, it has to meet Victoria’s pool and spa barrier requirements, including self-closing and self-latching operation. We can adjust hinges and latches so a pool gate closes and latches reliably. Compliance certificates and barrier inspections are done by registered building surveyors or inspectors, so we will tell you when a job needs one.

Repair or replace?

We will give you a straight answer. A fence is usually worth repairing when:

  • Most posts are sound and only one or two have failed
  • The palings are mostly intact and just need re-fixing or patching
  • The fence is reasonably straight and the right height for your needs

It is usually time for a new fence when:

  • Several posts are rotten, or the whole line is leaning
  • Most of the palings are grey, brittle and split
  • You are already spending money on it every winter

For full new boundary fences, especially long runs or Colorbond, a specialist fencing contractor is often the better option, and we will say so.

Dividing fences and your neighbour

In Victoria, the Fences Act 1968 sets out how neighbours share the cost of a dividing fence and the notice process for fencing work. If a repair is to a shared fence, it is worth talking to your neighbour first. The Victorian Government has a guide to dividing fences with template notices. We are happy to quote in a way that makes it easy to split the cost, and to work around your neighbour’s yard and pets.

Timber, fixings and finishes

For repairs we match the existing fence as closely as we can: hardwood palings, treated pine palings or lapped and capped styles. New timber will look brighter than weathered palings for a season or two before it greys off to match. If you want a uniform look sooner, we can apply a fence stain or oil to the repaired section or to the whole fence.

We use galvanised or stainless fixings so the nails do not rust and stain the timber. Posts are set in concrete at a depth that suits the fence height and the soil.

Other fence-adjacent jobs

While we are there, we can also:

  • Fit a lattice or slat extension on top of a fence for privacy (council and neighbour rules apply to height)
  • Install trellis for climbing plants
  • Replace a letterbox or fix a letterbox post
  • Build a small screen to hide bins or a heat pump unit
  • Repair timber retaining edges and garden bed borders
  • Clear vegetation from along a fence line so the repair can be done

Fences on rural and lifestyle blocks

On acreage in Tyers, Glengarry, Traralgon South and Hazelwood North we repair house-yard timber fences and gates, timber post-and-rail around paddocks near the house, and farm gates that have dropped on their hinges. Long runs of farm wire fencing are a job for a rural fencing contractor, but we are happy to fix the gate, re-hang a sagging farm gate, replace a strainer near the house or tidy a run of post-and-rail.

How we work

  • We look at the fence or gate, or you send photos through the quote form so we can scope it.
  • We dial before you dig. Before setting new posts we request underground service information through the free Before You Dig Australia service.
  • We bring replacement palings, posts, rails, concrete and hardware, so most repairs are done in one visit.
  • We take away the old timber and off-cuts.
  • We send photos of the finished work if you are an owner living elsewhere or a property manager.

Areas we cover for fence and gate repairs

Fence and gate repairs in Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Newborough, Churchill, Yallourn North, Glengarry, Tyers, Traralgon South and Hazelwood North. Fence jobs pair well with deck and pergola repairs, pressure washing and general property maintenance.

A closer look at post-saver repairs

Many fences we see have one or two posts snapped at ground level while the post above is still solid hardwood. A galvanised post support bolts to that sound section and is concreted into the ground. The fence comes back upright, and the ground-level weak point is gone, because steel sits where the timber used to rot. It avoids pulling the palings off, and it can be done without disturbing much of the neighbour’s garden. Where the post is rotten higher up, or the support would be too visible, we replace the whole post.

Getting the gate right first time

Gates are deceptively fiddly. A gate that hangs perfectly on a warm, dry day may bind in a wet July after the timber has swollen and the post has moved a little in soft ground. When we re-hang a gate we leave enough clearance at the latch side and the ground for seasonal movement. We set the hinges so the gate pulls itself back towards true, and brace the frame so the bottom corner on the latch side cannot drop. Where a gate is wide, heavy or on a slope, we will talk you through options such as a wheel kit, a drop bolt to hold it open, or splitting it into two leaves.

Fence maintenance that adds years

A timber fence lasts longer with a little attention. Every year or two, walk the line after winter. Look for posts that move when you push them, palings with popped nails, and soil or garden mulch built up against the bottom of the palings. That last one wicks moisture into the timber and is one of the fastest ways to rot a fence. Keep sprinklers from soaking the same section day after day. Trim climbing plants before they pull palings off. A coat of good fence oil or stain every few years slows the splitting and greying caused by the summer sun. If you would rather not do it yourself, we can fold a fence check into a regular property maintenance visit and fix small problems before the next big westerly turns them into a fallen panel.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace just a few palings?

Yes. We replace loose, split or missing palings with matching timber and re-fix the rest so the fence is secure.

My fence post has snapped at ground level. Does the whole fence need replacing?

Usually not. We can install a new post or bolt a galvanised post support to the sound timber and concrete it in.

Can you fix a gate that drags on the ground?

Yes. We re-hang sagging gates, replace worn hinges, add a brace and adjust or replace the latch.

Do you build complete new fences?

We build short sections and gates. For long new boundary fences or Colorbond runs, a specialist fencing contractor is often better value, and we will tell you if that is the case.

Who pays for repairs to a dividing fence?

In Victoria, the Fences Act generally has neighbours share the cost of a dividing fence, with notice requirements. Check the Victorian Government’s dividing fence guide and talk to your neighbour before work starts.

Can you repair storm damage for an insurance claim?

Yes. We can send dated photos and a written description of the damage and repair to support your claim.
