Gutter Cleaning

Gutters are easy to forget until they overflow. Then water pours over the edge onto the path, runs down the walls, soaks into the ground beside the house and, in the worst cases, backs up under the roof and into the eaves and ceilings. Blocked gutters also hold leaves and twigs on the roof line, which is a real fire risk in summer for homes near bush and grassland.

We clean gutters on single-storey homes, units and small commercial buildings across Traralgon, Morwell, Moe, Newborough, Churchill and the surrounding district. That includes established suburbs with mature trees as well as rural and lifestyle properties. Every clean includes the downpipes, and we send you photos so you can see the result.

Why Latrobe Valley gutters block

Big street and garden trees

Many established streets in Traralgon, Moe and Morwell have large street trees, and older gardens often have big eucalypts, oaks, elms and liquidambars. Deciduous trees drop huge volumes of leaves in autumn. Eucalypts shed bark, leaves and gumnuts all year, with more in hot weather.

Rural and bush-edge properties

Homes in Tyers, Glengarry, Traralgon South, Hazelwood North and near the Morwell National Park and Strzelecki foothills often sit among native trees. Gutters there can fill several times a year.

Wind

Strong westerlies blow debris onto roofs even where there are no trees nearby, especially on exposed sites.

Sludge and moss

Leaves break down into a dense black sludge that holds water and grows moss. That weighs gutters down, rusts steel gutters from the inside and blocks downpipes.

What our gutter clean includes

1. Safety set-up. We use a stable ladder with stand-offs, positioned to avoid damaging gutters and not resting on downpipes, or safe roof access on low, gentle-pitch roofs where appropriate.

2. Debris removal. Leaves, sticks, gumnuts, sludge and moss are cleared by hand and scoop, bagged and removed. We do not just blow it all into your garden.

3. Downpipe check. We check each downpipe outlet, clear blockages at the top, and flush the downpipe with a hose to confirm water flows through.

4. Flush. We run water along the gutter to check it falls towards the outlets and that there are no leaks at joints or corners.

5. Look-over. We note rusted sections, sagging brackets, leaking joints, damaged downpipes and anything else worth knowing about.

6. Photos. Before-and-after photos are sent with the invoice. This is especially useful for landlords, agents and owners who live away.

Minor gutter repairs

While we are up there, we can carry out minor repairs:

  • Re-fixing sagging gutter brackets to restore the fall
  • Sealing small leaking joints and corners with gutter sealant
  • Re-fixing loose or disconnected downpipes
  • Fitting leaf strainers or guards at downpipe outlets
  • Replacing short lengths of damaged downpipe at ground level

Larger gutter replacement, whole roof drainage redesign and any work connecting into stormwater drains is plumbing work in Victoria and must be done by a licensed plumber. Rusted-through gutters usually need replacing, and we will tell you if we see that.

Single-storey only

We clean gutters on single-storey buildings only. Double-storey homes, steep roofs and tall commercial buildings need height-safety systems and specialist gutter or roofing contractors. That is a deliberate safety decision. Falls from heights are one of the most common causes of serious injuries in building and maintenance work.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

It depends on the trees around your home:

  • No large trees nearby: once a year, usually in late autumn
  • A few trees nearby: twice a year, in late autumn and late spring
  • Surrounded by trees or in bushland: three or four times a year, plus before the fire season

Before winter is the most important clean. Winter rain is steady in the Latrobe Valley, and gutters need to run freely. Before summer is the second most important, for fire safety.

Gutters and bushfire safety

The CFA recommends clearing gutters of leaves and debris as part of preparing your property for the fire season. Embers carried on the wind can ignite dry leaves in gutters, which can then spread fire to the roof space or eaves. If you live in or near a bushfire-prone area, such as the rural edges of Traralgon South, Tyers, Glengarry and Churchill, clear your gutters before summer and again if leaves build up during the season.

Gutter guards can reduce how often gutters fill, though no guard is maintenance-free. If you already have guards, we can lift sections, clear debris underneath and re-fix them. For a new guard system, a specialist installer is often best.

Signs your gutters need attention

  • Water spilling over the gutter edge during rain
  • Plants or grass growing in the gutter
  • Stains running down the fascia or walls
  • Puddles or erosion along the base of the house
  • Gutters sagging or pulling away from the fascia
  • Birds or rats nesting in the gutters
  • A damp or stained patch on the ceiling near an external wall

Why overflowing gutters matter

Gutter overflow does more damage than people expect:

  • Fascia rot. Water sitting against timber fascia boards rots them, and that is a carpentry repair we see often.
  • Eaves and ceiling damage. Water backing up under the roof sheets or tiles can soak into eaves linings and ceiling plaster.
  • Foundation and subfloor problems. Water dumped along the base of the house soaks into reactive clay soil, which can cause movement and cracking. It can also make the subfloor damp, which attracts termites and encourages rot.
  • Rust. Wet sludge sitting in steel gutters rusts them from the inside.
  • Mosquitoes. Standing water in gutters breeds mosquitoes in summer.

Gutter cleaning for rentals and strata

Gutter maintenance in a rental is generally the rental provider’s responsibility. Regular cleaning prevents water damage and keeps the property safe. We can work with property managers to schedule gutter cleans, arrange access with tenants and send photos for the file. For strata properties and unit blocks with single-storey roofs, we can clean all units in one visit.

Combine gutters with other jobs

Since we are already set up with ladders, gutter cleaning pairs well with:

  • Clearing debris from roof valleys on low roofs (where safe)
  • Checking and cleaning skylights from the ground or ladder
  • Pressure washing the paths and driveway afterwards
  • Repairing rotten fascia board sections
  • Fixing loose downpipe brackets on the walls
  • Clearing leaves around subfloor vents and drains at ground level

See also pressure washing and property maintenance.

Water tanks and gutters

Many rural and lifestyle properties around Tyers, Glengarry, Traralgon South and Hazelwood North collect rainwater from the roof into tanks, sometimes for household use. Clean gutters matter even more there. Leaves and sludge washing into a tank affect water quality and block inlet screens. As part of a gutter clean on a tank-fed property, we can check and clean inlet strainers and first-flush diverters where they are accessible at ground or ladder height, and let you know if screens are damaged. Tank cleaning and water treatment are specialist jobs, and we will refer them on.

Gutter cleaning for older residents

Gutter cleaning is one of the most dangerous jobs older homeowners still try to do themselves. A fall from a ladder can be life-changing. If you have an older parent or neighbour in the Valley who is still climbing up to clear their gutters, booking a regular clean is one of the kindest things you can do. We can schedule recurring cleans and send photos to family who live elsewhere.

Gutter types we see in the Valley

Quad and half-round steel gutters

Most homes built from the 1950s onward have galvanised or Colorbond quad gutters, with some older homes still running half-round gutters on brackets. Galvanised gutters on older homes are often at the end of their life, and cleaning can reveal pinholes and rusted seams that were hidden under the sludge. We point these out and photograph them so you can plan replacement with a plumber.

Box gutters

Some homes, especially those with additions or skillion roofs, have internal box gutters running between roof sections or behind parapets. These are a common source of leaks into ceilings when they block, because overflow goes inside the house instead of over the edge. We clear accessible box gutters on single-storey roofs and check that their outlets and rainheads are clear. Box gutter repairs and re-lining are plumber’s work.

Fascia gutters and concealed systems

Newer homes in Traralgon’s estates often have slim fascia gutters integrated with the fascia board. These hold less water, so they overflow more quickly when partly blocked, and need regular cleaning even where trees are young.

What happens to the debris

We bag gutter debris and take it away. Leaves and organic material go to green waste where possible. If you have a compost heap or want the leaf litter for your garden, just say so and we will leave it where you want. We do not wash sludge down the downpipes into the stormwater, because that blocks the drains below ground and sends pollution into local creeks and waterways such as the Traralgon Creek and the Latrobe River.

Weather and timing

We avoid cleaning gutters in heavy rain, strong wind or when roofs and ladders are wet and slippery, because safety comes first. In the Latrobe Valley that sometimes means moving a booking by a day or two in winter. We will let you know by email if the weather changes the plan.
